Why are Transferable Skills so Important?

Why are Transferable Skills so Important?

Employers are looking for people who can do a bit of everything, and who have the ability to adapt their skills to the tasks and projects assigned to them.

If you’re sat there thinking you have no transferable skills, you do. These types of skills are learned in everyday life and aren’t just found in the workplace.

What are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills are exactly what it says on the tin, they are skills which can be transferred from one role to another. Some roles will have job specific skills; however, the beauty of transferable skills is they can be applied across industries and a multitude of roles. Transferable skills will be taught well before you step into your first job, as you generally learn them as a child and continue developing them throughout your life and career. Most transferable skills are also general life skills.

Here are some examples: leadership, time management, prioritising, delegation, listening, communication, research and analysis, problem solving, critical analysis, resilience, teamwork, organisation.

What are Hard and Soft Skills?

On your CV, you’ll detail both hard skills and soft skills. But what is the difference?

Hard skills refer to specific abilities you’ve learned or practised. Hard skills could be a degree, industry certificate, foreign language skills, computer skills, SEO marketing etc. They are skills which are more likely to enhance your ability in certain rolls, but they’re generally less transferable than soft skills.

Soft skills are classified as non-technical skills, and are more commonly transferable skills such as communication, listening, time management, empathy, positivity, teamwork etc. Employers will generally look for people with good soft skills in customer related jobs, as having these skills alludes to the fact, you’re good with people. Anyone role which has direct contact with customers, clients or candidates means the employer will be on the hunt for great interpersonal skills throughout the interviewing process.

Why are Transferable Skills Important?

Having transferable skills shows your employer your adaptability and capability in your role. They are also important because having a well-rounded collection of transferable skills means you can apply for most jobs even if you don’t have the exact skills required, your transferable skills can only grow and become stronger, which is a great asset to have.

Should you Include Transferable Skills on your CV?

You should definitely include your transferable skills in your CV! Showcase your ability to do the job, but don’t just list every skill you have. Pick your skills for a reason, remember to check for hints given by the employer as to the skills and attributes they’re looking for, those which seem most relevant to the role.

When listing your skills, and how you can prove that you use have used that skill in the past. Having examples is a much more effective ways of showing your skills then simply listing to them down. Try not to exaggerate the skills or experiences you’ve had, as you could come unstuck in the interview process when you’re questioned you on it.

Transferable skills are important to promote on your CV and in your job roles. They’re attributes most employers look for their employees to have. Remember, you always have time to develop and grow your transferable skills.
