Remote Team Building Activities

Remote Team Building Activities

As remote working has become a lot more common over the last year, it’s even more important to ensure your team participate in team building activities so they work well and have a good working relationship. Therefore, we have made a blog of suggestions of how you can have fun whist working and team building at the same time.

What is Remote Team Building

Remote team building is using the internet, video messages and other forms of communication to connect the team no matter where they are working. In the office you are surrounded by people, so being able to form bonds is much more straightforward. Therefore, companies and employees need to put effort into helping team building with remote recruits. Remote team building is important in order for all recruits to feel important and valued. This will help each person’s general motivation and productivity.

Ideas for Virtual Team Building

Ice breakers:

Despite many people not particularly liking ice breakers, they're actually a great way to start a meeting or gathering where people don’t know each other well. Ice breakers really can be any small activity that comes to mind. Here are a few fun suggestions:

Silly questions

  • ‘If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?’
  • ‘If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?’
  • ‘If you could be one age forever, what age would it be?’

First and/or worst job

Work related trivia

2 truths and 1 lie

Scavenger hunt

Ice breakers do exactly what it says on the tin, they break the ice at the start of any face to face or video meeting. They allow people to be themselves by sharing small intimate details about them.

Team Building Activities

Virtual Breaks:

Maybe try a virtual coffee or lunch break. Depending on numbers either break everyone into small break out rooms or all stay as one in the main room. Aim to make it more personal, and not work related, so you can all get to know each other better. Perhaps even try a small game.

It would be a nice idea if there is a birthday, retirement, anniversary etc to hold a lunch break gathering to celebrate. This will bring the team together and show you care for each individual member.

Remote Tours

If the company has a hybrid working environment, then maybe get those who are in the office to give some remote recruits a tour, so they can picture their colleagues at work in the office space.

Then, why not try asking your remote colleagues for a tour of their workspace at home. This should help everyone feel more included in the working environment.

Virtual Events

Virtual events are a great way to team build and get people talking. This could be through…

Virtual Drinks

This would be fun on an evening and a chance for a more personal non-work-related opportunity to build the team.

A Quiz

This could be work related or something completely different.

A Guest Speaker

A guest speaker could be on a work-related topic, or something unique. It’s a nice chance for the team to come together and all learn from someone outside of the workplace.

Visual Workout Sessions

You could even make this a challenge within the office to see who participates the most in these activities.

Virtual Book Club

Perhaps choose a book a month and have a meeting one evening to discuss the reading.

Virtual Cooking Classes

Possibly hire a chef or if you know a dish you feel comfortable sharing, why not try teaching your colleagues.

Give Recognition

Try to make sure that remote workers are given the same recognition as those in the office. If something is of great importance then mark it and celebrate the achievement. This will create a good team atmosphere within the company.

Group Chat

Having a group chat with all staff members on it, as more of a personal form of communication can mean you send each other daily shots of what you are doing – maybe something you baked, or somewhere exciting you went. This give an alternative form of communication outside of work and is a great way for the team to get to know each other.

Now, we know that some of these ideas are silly and fun, and others more serious. However, there's no right way to remotely team build. We have just given some suggestions, but there may be other things which work better for your company. So don’t limit yourself think outside the box.

Stay Safe,

Team Affecto.
