Yorkshire Day occurs on the 1st August,  this tradition began in 1975 and is still going today. Therefore, it’s only right if we commemorate it in this week’s blog!

Food and drink created in Yorkshire:

  1. Yorkshire Puddings – You can’t eat beef without them!
  2. Yorkshire Tea - The best brand of tea if you ask me.
  3. Wensleydale – A favourite of Wallace and Gromit’s!
  4. Yorkshire Custard Tart – Traditionally made with rose water.
  5. Henderson’s relish – Created in the centre of Sheffield in 1885.
  6. Yorkshire Parkin – Originally a tradition for bonfire night.
  7. Rhubarb – West Yorkshire used to be home to 90% of the world’s winter forced rhubarb.
  8. Liquorice – All the way from Pontefract.
  9. Ginger beer – First made in Yorkshire in the 1700s.
  10. Kit Kat and Smarties – Originated in York in 1864.

Famous people from Yorkshire

  1. Dame Judi Dench
  2. Sean Bean – Who are we kidding we all knew this one!
  3. Lena Headey – She was born in Bermuda but raised in West Yorkshire.
  4. Captain James Cook – Born in Marton-in-Cleveland.
  5. The Brownlee Brothers – Alistair’s gold post-box is in Leeds to commemorate his Olympic gold.
  6. Matthew Lewis – Mr Neville Longbottom himself is actually from Leeds.
  7. Guy Fawkes – He was born in York.
  8. Emily Bronte – Emily and her sisters inspired the name the ‘Bronte Country’ in West Yorkshire.
  9. Harold Wilson – One of three Yorkshire born Prime Ministers.
  10. Jessica Ennis Hill – Her gold post-box commemorating her 2012 Olympic victory stands in Sheffield city centre.

Fact you didn’t know about Yorkshire

  1. The Highest Mountain – Mickle Fell at 2,591 feet.
  2. Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK with 2.9millon acres of land.
  3. If Yorkshire was a country, it would have come 12th in the 2012 Olympics.
  4. Sheffield FC is the oldest football club in the world and was founded in 1857.
  5. The Bingley Arms, Leeds is the oldest pub in Britain and dates back to the pre-Viking era.
  6. York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe.
  7. The Yorkshire Dales is made up of 40 individual dales.
  8. The biggest shopping centre is Meadowhall, Sheffield.
  9. Scarborough was England’s first seaside resort.
  10. York was briefly governed by the Roman Empire.

Ways to celebrate Yorkshire Day

  1. Take a trip to your local town or city to participate in local Yorkshire Day events.
  2. Go out for a walk in the Yorkshire Dales.
  3. Celebrate with a good old roast, with lots of Yorkshire puddings and gravy.
  4. Celebrate by baking some Parkin or a Custard Tart.
